Málaga Airport sits 30 km east of Calahonda. The drive is short and easy — but the right way to do it depends on who you are and what kind of trip you're having. After hosting 25+ groups of guests at La Casa Neil, I've helped figure this out for every combination of "couple with one suitcase", "family with a buggy", "golf group with bags", and "snowbird couple staying six weeks." Here's the playbook.
The quick-decision matrix
- Family with luggage and children → pre-booked private transfer (€45-60)
- Couple doing day trips to Marbella, Ronda, Málaga → hire car (from €25/day off-peak, €45-80/day Aug)
- Solo or couple, fixed in Calahonda, on a budget → Avanza bus to Fuengirola + taxi (€10-15 total)
- Two couples or a group of four+ → either pre-booked van transfer (€55-75) or two-car hire
- Late-night arrival (after midnight) → pre-booked transfer every time (taxi queues thin out, bus stops running)
Option 1: Pre-booked private transfer
Cost: €45-60 each way for up to 4 people in a saloon car. €55-80 for a van that fits 6-8 + luggage. Round-trip discounts usually 5-10%.
Time: 25-30 minutes door-to-door on the AP-7 toll motorway. The driver pays the toll.
Where to book: Holiday Taxis, Resorthoppa, Suntransfers, or direct through Spanish local operators like Maxitrans or Marbella Airport Transfer. Prices are similar — read reviews on the operator before you book.
When this wins:
- You're arriving with kids, a buggy, and four suitcases at midnight after a long flight.
- You don't plan to leave Calahonda much (one or two day trips at most).
- You hate driving on the wrong side of the road / dealing with hire-car queues.
The catch: if your flight is delayed an hour, most operators wait free (within reason). Get a phone-number confirmation and the driver's number before you fly.
Option 2: Hire car
Cost: €25-40/day for a small car in shoulder season (March, April, October, November). €45-80/day in July-August peak. Add €15-25/day for full insurance excess waiver (don't skip this — Spanish hire-car excess claims are the most common nasty surprise).
Time: Pickup at AGP terminal car-rental zone takes 30-45 min (longer if you arrive on a Saturday afternoon when everyone collects). Then 25-30 minutes' drive on the AP-7.
Where to book: compare on the meta-search aggregators (DiscoverCars, RentalCars). For peace of mind on excess, OK Mobility, Centauro, and Goldcar each have their fans and their critics — read the most recent reviews, not the headline price.
When this wins:
- You'll do more than two day trips: Marbella, Mijas Pueblo, Ronda, Malaga city, Cabopino, Gibraltar.
- You're staying 7+ days. The cost-per-day drops, the value of mobility goes up.
- You're comfortable with right-hand-side driving and Spanish road signs (they're clear).
The catch: hire-car excess fraud (operators inventing damage on return) is real. Photograph the car thoroughly on collection and on return. Pay the few euros extra for full excess waiver from the hire company OR buy a third-party excess policy (about €40 for the week — well worth it).
Option 3: Taxi (metered, at the airport rank)
Cost: €60-75 depending on traffic. Surcharge of around €6 between 22:00 and 06:00. €0.50 per piece of luggage at the driver's discretion.
Time: 25-30 minutes if the taxi queue is short. Add 15-30 minutes for the queue itself during summer peak.
When this wins:
- Your trip is short notice and you didn't pre-book a transfer.
- You're a small group, light on luggage, arriving outside peak hours.
The catch: taxis at AGP are tightly regulated and metered, so you won't be ripped off — but you also won't beat the price of a pre-booked transfer. There's no upside vs. Option 1 unless you didn't plan ahead.
Option 4: Bus + taxi (the budget play)
Cost: €7-10 for the Avanza coach to Fuengirola + €8-12 for a local taxi from Fuengirola to Calahonda = around €15-22 total.
Time: 60-75 minutes door-to-door. Avanza runs roughly every 30 minutes from the airport.
Where to book: Avanza website (formerly Avanzabus). You can also buy on board.
When this wins:
- You're a solo budget traveller.
- You travel light (one carry-on, no buggy).
- You enjoy public transport and don't mind a small puzzle on arrival.
The catch: with luggage and kids, it stops being fun fast. Avanza doesn't run after roughly 23:30 — if your flight lands late, this isn't an option.
What about the train?
The Málaga–Fuengirola Cercanías commuter train (line C1) is brilliant for many destinations on the coast — but it doesn't reach Calahonda. The closest stop is Fuengirola, then you'd taxi (similar to the bus option above). For Calahonda specifically, the train is no faster than the bus.
The AP-7 vs the N-340 (driving notes)
If you're driving, two roads connect AGP to Calahonda:
- AP-7 (Autopista del Sol) — toll motorway. Faster, less stop-start, €3-4 each way. The default choice for transfers and hire cars.
- N-340 / A-7 (Autovía del Mediterráneo) — free coast road, slower, more traffic lights, runs closer to the sea. Take it once on the way home for the views; pay the toll on arrival when you're tired.
